American Staffordshire Terrier Overview

This dog breed originated in England in the early part of the twentieth century. The American Staffordshire Terrier breed is now accepted by the American Kennel Club. This breed should not to be confused with the Staffordshire Bull Terrier. American Staffordshire terriers gained in popularity in the 1920s with “Pete the Pup's” appearances in the Our Gang (The Little Rascals) comedies.

American Staffordshire Terrier Characteristics

This dog breed is extremely strong for its size. The American Staffordshire Terrier is agile, muscular and stocky, with a broad, powerful head. The muzzle is medium in length, rounded on upper side and falls away abruptly below the eyes. The eyes are dark and round, low down in the skull and set far apart. The jaw is very strong. The un-docked tail is short compared to the dog’s size and tapers to a point.

Temperament

This terrier has a very even and stable temperament. The American Staffordshire Terrier is a reliable and devoted companion. This breed does well with small children, however should never be left unsupervised around them, as they are powerful dogs who tend to be rambunctious. As a generally rule, the American Staffordshire Terrier gets on exceptionally well with other dogs, but they do tend to be dominant. The American Staffordshire is extremely intelligent, energetic and affectionate.

American Staffordshire Terrier Care

This dog breed does not require much grooming. The American Staffordshire Terrier is shorthaired and sheds very little. A regular rubdown with a rough, dry towel or specially made rubber glove is sufficient to remove dead and loose hair. This breed rarely requires a bath and when necessary, a dry shampoo is normally sufficient.

American Staffordshire Terrier Coat

The American Staffordshire Terrier has a very short coat that requires minimal grooming. The coat of this breed is short, even in length and stiff to the touch. The coat comes in a variety of colors including white, black and tan. Less than 80% white is preferred.

American Staffordshire Terrier Training

The excessively vivacious nature and sheer power of the American Staffordshire Terrier make training this breed challenging. They are intelligent, yet very willful and stubborn dogs. Consistent and firm training by a dominant handler is normally best. Obedience training and socialization at an early age are advised.

American Staffordshire Terrier Activity

This dog breed requires a fair amount of exercise. The American Staffordshire Terrier is energetic and lively and does well in a medium sized yard. This breed does not adapt well to apartment living as they tend to bore easily and may become destructive. Daily walks and runs are recommended in addition to free roaming in a fenced area.
