Azawakh Overview
This dog breed originated in Africa. The Azawakh is a sight hound that was bred by nomadic tribes for guarding, hunting and companionship. They are extremely fast when working and are able to reach and sustain speeds of up to 40 miles per hour. Azawakh's are adept at hunting hare and gazelle. This breed is extremely rare in North America.
Azawakh Characteristics
This breed is elegant, slender and athletic in appearance. The Azawakh is a swift, aloof, ever-watchful and resilient dog.
Azawakh Temperament
This breed is a true pack canine and the Azawakh gets along very well with other dogs, especially those they were raised with, but not with other household pets. This breed is not ideally suited to first time or novice owners. The Azawakh relates well to considerate children, but should never be left unsupervised. This breed is highly protective of their family, residence, and territory. The Azawakh is wary and suspicious of strangers, but are loyal, affectionate and dedicated to their family and those they know. The Azawakh is a regal and noble breed with tremendous endurance.
Azawakh Care
The Azawakhbreed requires occasional brushing. To preserve the coat, this breed should only be bathed when absolutely necessary and dry shampoo will normally suffice. The ears and paw pads of the Azawakh need to be checked regularly. This breed is prone to seizures, myositis, spondylosis and auto-immune problems. Azawakh's do not do well in colder climates.
Azawakh Coat
The coat of the Azawakh is silky, short and close. This breed is an average shedder.
Azawakh Training
Early socialization and obedience training are recommended for the Azawakh.
Azawakh Activity
The Azawakh is an extremely energetic dog that requires an energetic owner.. This breed is not suitable for apartment dwelling and requires a large, securely fenced yard or rural setting with ample opportunity to run. The Azawakh excels at field hunting, lure coursing and agility. This dogbreed enjoys free-play, family activities, hiking, jogging and swimming.
