This dog breed originated in Belgium and was developed for guarding and herding sheep. The Belgian Shepherd Malinois is one of four breeds of Belgian Shepherds. Although popular in their native country as police dogs, they are rare in the United States.

This is a double coat dog breed. The outer coat of the Belgian Shepherd Malinois is weather-resistant, straight, short and hard. The under coat is dense. The hair around the neck, tail and back of the thighs is a bit longer.

This dog breed is very intelligent and obedient. The Belgian Shepherd Malinois tends to be somewhat demanding and dominant. Early, intense, and ongoing socialization and obedience training is essential. This breed will not respond to harsh or heavy-handed training methods. Training must be done with firmness, fairness, tolerance, consistency and reward.

This dog breed requires an inordinate amount of exercise and mental stimulation. The Belgian Shepherd Malinois is not suitable for city or apartment dwelling. This breed does best in a rural setting where there is a job to do and ample room to roam and run. They do extremely well in Schutzhund, bomb and narcotics detection, tracking, and herding.
