Originating in the Southern region of the United States, the Black Mouth Cur breed was developed as an all-purpose working dog and family companion. Highly regarded for their skill at hunting squirrel, raccoon, bear, boar and mountain lion, this dog breed was also used for herding cattle and as a guard dog. Although the Black Mouth Cur is an excellent companion, they are first and foremost a working breed.

This dog breed is powerful, well-balanced, tenacious and gutsy. The Black Mouth Cur is built for power, speed and agility. This is a rugged, sturdy and relentless dog breed. They are highly proficient at swimming, tracking, treeing and baying.

Black Mouth Cur Temperament

This dog breed is devoted, energetic and even-tempered. The Black Mouth Cur does best in a home with older children due to their innate instinct to herd. This breed does well with other big dogs provided they are not classified as a toy breed. They are not suitable for homes with non-canine pets. The Black Mouth Cur is highly protective of their family, home and territory and will fight to the death to defend those they love. This breed is exceptionally affectionate towards women.

This dog breed requires occasional brushing with a firm bristle brush to remove loose and dead hair. The Black Mouth Cur should only be bathed when absolutley necessary using a mild shampoo to prevent drying of the skin. It is important to regularly check the ears for debris and to remove excess hair. The nails must be clipped regularly. The Black Mouth Cur has no known health issues.

The coat of the Black Mouth Cur is short, straight, smooth and fine. This breed sheds little to no hair.

This is extremely sensitive and intelligent dog breed. Obedience and socialization are advised. The Black Mouth Cur does not respond well to harsh or heavy-handed methods. Black Mouth Curs do well with short and varied sessions to prevent boredom. Training should be performed with fairness, firmness and consistency.

Black Mouth Cur Activity

This dog breed is not suited to apartment or city living. As a working and hunting breed, the Black Mouth Cur requires an above average amount of mental and physical activity. This breed does best in a country setting or a home with a large, securely fenced yard.
