This dog breed originated in Germany in the late 19th century. The Boxer's name is thought to be derived from the "boxing" made with their front paws. This breed is solid, stocky and medium sized with powerful jaws. The Boxer is used for search and rescue, police and military work.

Boxer Characteristics

This dog breed is spirited , strong and extremely loyal. The Boxer has an extremely high energy level. They carry themselves with pride and dignity, but are never arrogant. The Boxer has a stoic stance makes and intelligent, loving and delightful companion.

Boxer Temperament

This dog breed is tolerant, dignified and confident. Although curious, the Boxer is cautious of strangers. These are fearless and courageous dogs, especially if threatened. The Boxer has a acute hearing and is extremely alert, which makes them excellent guard dogs. The Boxer adores children and other pets, especially those they were raised with. They thrive on human companionship and do not like to be left alone for extended periods of time. 

Boxer Care

This dog breed has a neat, short coat that needs minimal grooming. Occasional brushing with a firm bristle brush is recommended. Bathing should only be done when absolutely necessary to ensure the essential oils are not stripped from their skin. This breed is typically clean and self-grooms. The Boxer is prone to a number of health concerns including cardiomyopathy, sub-aortic stenosis, hip dysplasia. tumors, epilepsy, allergies and skin disorders. A well-balanced diet is absolutely essential as they have sensitive stomachs and a tendency to flatulence. Boxers do not do well in cold climates.

Boxer Coat

This dog breed has a short-haired coat that is shiny, smooth and close to the body. The coat comes in numerous colors including fawn, red and brindle. Tthe Boxer has flashes of white on their underbelly, chest and feet, and occasionally on their face. The Boxer is an average shedder and sheds all year round.

Boxer Training

This dog breed is clever and quick to learn. Obedience training is essential. The Boxer requires a fairly dominant owner who is capable of taking control. This dog breed does not respond well to harsh treatment and training should be performed with fairness, firmness and consistency. Boxers do well in competitive obedience and love to learn and perform tricks.

Boxer Activity

This dog breed enjoys regular play and outdoor exercise. The Boxer loves to play with their family and does best with a medium sized, fenced yard. It is important to keep this breed stimulated and occupied indoors to prevent destructive behavior. The Boxer adapts well to apartment living provided they are sufficiently and regularly exercised.
