Originating in Italy, this ancient dog breed was highly prized by the aristocracy for their ability to hunt feathered game. The Bracco Italiano nearly became extinct during the early 1900's, but the breed was revived by Italian breeder Ferdinando Delor de Ferrabonc. The Bracco Italiano is extremely rare in the United States.

This dog breed is muscular and powerful with a distinctively shaped head. The Bracco Italiano has a somewhat serious nature, powerful appearance and is squarely built.

This dog breed is calm, gentle and devoted. The Bracco Italiano forms close bonds with their family. They do well with older children, dogs and other pets. They is active, energetic, and affectionate. The Bracco Italiano does not like to be left alone for extended periods of time or be ignored. They are intelligent, agile and vital dogs. Although bred for hunting, they also make excellent companion dogs. This breed is not recommended for novice dog owners.

This dog breed requires regular brushing with a firm bristle-brush to remove loose and dead hair. To preserve the natural oils of the coat , the Bracco Italiano should only be bathed when absolutely necessary. It is important to check and clean the ears regularly. Bracco Italianos are prone to bloat, hip dysplasia, eye problems and ear infection.

The Bracco Italiano thrives on hunting, swimming and family interaction. They are best suited to a rural setting where there is room to roam. They enjoy and excel at tracking, hiking, agility, and search and rescue.
