This dog breed originated in France and was bred as a hare and small game hunter. The Briquet Griffon Vendeen was almost extinct after World War II, but the breed was revived by the efforts of French dog show judge Hubert Dezamy. Today, this breed is relatively unknown in their native country and is rare and hard to find in the United States.
