Briquet Griffon Vendéen Overview

This dog breed originated in France and was bred as a hare and small game hunter. The Briquet Griffon Vendeen was almost extinct after World War II, but the breed was revived by the efforts of French dog show judge Hubert Dezamy. Today, this breed is relatively unknown in their native country and is rare and hard to find in the United States.

This dog breed is well-built, hardy, intense and bold. The Briquet Griffon Vendéen is agile, athletic and is very nimble over rough terrain. Briquet Griffon Vendeens exude power and strength. Their most notable feature is their distinctive coat.

Briquet Griffon Vendéen Temperament

This dog breed is buoyant, fun-loving and playful, but also a little unruly and extremely independent. The Briquet Griffon Vendeen gets along well with older children, other dogs and non-canine pets, especially those they were raised with. This is a devoted, hard-working and dependable breed.

Briquet Griffon Vendéen Care

This dog breed requires regular combing to prevent matting and tangling. To preserve the natural oils of the coat, the Briquet Griffon Vendéen should only be bathed when absolutely necessary. This breed has minimal known health issues, but this could be due to their rarity. There have been incidences of patella luxation and distichiasis.

Briquet Griffon Vendéen Coat

This dog breed has a double coat. The outer coat of the Briquet Griffon Vendéen is long, thick and wiry. The hair is heavier on the eyebrows and  muzzle forming a moustache. The under coat is soft and dense.

This dog breed can be challenging to train. The Briquet Griffon Vendeen is very independent and single-minded. They will not respond well to harsh or heavy-handed methods and training should be performed with firmness, fairness, patience and consistency.

This dog breed is not suitable for city or apartment living. The Briquet Griffon Vendéen requires an inordinate amount of physical exercise and mental stimulation. This breed is best suited to a country environment where there is ample room to roam and hunt.
