Originating in the USSR, this ancient working dog breed was used to guard livestock against large predators, such as wolves and bears, and continues to do so today. The Central Asian Ovtcharka is popular in England, Poland and Italy. Due to export prohibitions, the Central Asian Ovtcharka is not well known in the United States and is difficult to obtain.

This dog breed is both massive and formidable. The Central Asian Ovtcharka is muscular, powerful, bold and brave. This breed is well balanced, fearless, sturdy and athletic.
Central Asian Ovtcharka Temperament
This dog breed is not suitable for timid or novice dog owners. The Central Asian Ovtcharka is confident, independent, daring and hard working. They are distrustful and wary of strangers and will not back down when threatened. Central Asian Ovtcharkas are exceedingly protective of their family, property and territory. This is a loyal, calm and committed breed. They get along well with children, especially those they were been raised with, but can be somewhat intolerant with unfamiliar children. They get along well with other dogs and household pets, provided they do not feel challenged.

This dog breed requires occasional brushing to remove loose and dead hair. To preserve the natural oils of the skin and coat, the Central Asian Ovtcharka should only be bather when absolutely necessary. This dog breed is prone to hip dysplasia and bloat.
Central Asian Ovtcharka Coat
This dog breed has a double coat that presents in two coat types: long and short. The outer coat of the long coat variety is coarse and long. There is extra hair on the backs of the hind legs, tail, ears and neck. The short coat variety has an outer coat of short, coarse hair. The under coat of both varieties is soft and thick.

This dog breed requires early and intense socialization, provided they are not being utilized as a flock guardian. The Central Asian Ovtcharka is a dominant breed that requires an experienced handler. This dog breed will not tolerate or respond to forceful, harsh or heavy-handed training methods. Training should be performed with respect, firmness, fairness, patience and consistency.

This dog breed is not suitable for city or apartment living. The Central Asian Ovtcharka is a nocturnal barker. This dog breed does best in a rural setting where there is with a job to do and ample room to roam.
