This ancient dog breed originated in China more than 2000 years ago. The Chow Chow is an all-purpose breed that was used for hunting, herding, pulling and protection. This breed is often referred to as "the Chow", and today are used primarily as companion dogs.
Chow Chow Characteristics
This dog breed is truly dignified and beautiful. The unique characteristic of this dog breed is their blue-black tongue. The Chow Chow is highly intelligent, has an independent spirit and a dignified demeanor. This dog breed can be extremely aloof and discerning.
Chow Chow Temperament
Generally, this dog breed is both polite and patient. The ChowChow is extremely loyal and sociable with their family, but exceedingly reserved with strangers. They most often will become attached and overly protective of one individual member of the family. The Chow Chow can be a bit dominant and stubborn and requires a fairly dominant owner. This is an independent breed with a mind of their own. The Chow Chow generally does not get along well with other pets, unless they are socialized from an early age. This breed tends to get along well with older children, provided they are treated with respect.
Chow Chow Care
This dog breed requires a fair amount of maintenance. The Chow Chow should be brushed daily. Proper grooming is essential to keep their coat in peak condition. The Chow Chow should be bathed or dry shampooed when necessary. This breed is prone to asentropin, heat prostration, allergies, skin problems and hip dysplasia. The Chow Chow has a very low tolerance to anesthesia and does not do well in warm climates.
Chow Chow Coat
This dog breed has an abundant double coat that comes in two varieties: smooth or rough. The fur of the Chow Chow is especially thick around the neck area and resembles a lion's mane. The outer coat is coarse and is supported by a thick under coat. The most common coat colors of the ChowChow are red, black, blue, tan and gray. This dog breed is a heavy seasonal shedder.
Chow Chow Training
This dogbreed requires intense and ongoing socialization and obedience training. The ChowChow is relatively easy to house train. These dogs are independent thinkers and will only perform tasks that make sense to them. The Chow Chow needs to learn from an early age who their master is or they will take over. This breed requires firmness, fairness, and consistency. The ChowChow does not respond well to harsh or forceful training methods and may become aggressive if treated with disrespect. This breed makes an excellent watch and guard dog.
Chow Chow Activity
This dog breed tends to be a little lazy. The Chow Chow prefers to stay indoors where they are relatively inactive. This breed does enjoy a small, securely fenced yard, but cannot remain outside for long periods of time in hot weather. The Chow Chow enjoys a short, daily walk. The Chow is well suited for apartment dwelling, provided they are given sufficient exercise.
