Cockapoo

Cockapoo Overview

This dog breed is a cross between either the American Cocker Spaniel or English Cocker Spaniel and a Poodle. The Cockapoo has been known in the United States since about 1950. This dog breed continues to grow in popularity as they generally combine the extrovert, loving personality of the Cocker Spaniel with the low-shedding, low-dander qualities of the Poodle. Cockapoos are intelligent and active, and thrive when they receive regular exercise.

Cockapoo Characteristics

This dog breed is loyal, intelligent, and very affectionate. The Cockapoo is relatively easy to train and is thought to be one of the smartest dogs in the world. The Cockapoo has a very sweet nature.

Cockapoo Temperament

This dog breed is keen to please, energetic and sociable. The Cockapoo is a very popular choice as a companion dog. This dog breed generally gets along well with children and other animals, but should always be supervised. Both the Poodle and Spaniel breeds have a tendency towards aggression if not socialized from a young age.

Cockapoo Care

This dog breed requires a fair amount of maintenance. The Cockapoo should be brushed and combed regularly. This is a low-shedding breed and with regular brushing sheds little to no hair. The Cockapoo should be clipped at least once a year. Like many floppy-eared breeds, Cockapoos can be susceptible to ear infections, and it is important to keep their ears clean and dry. This dog breed is generally very healthy and robust, with a lifespan from 14 to 18 years. There are no documented health issues for this breed, but both purebred Poodles and Cocker Spaniels can suffer from luxating patellas (loose knees) and eye disorders, including  PRA.

Cockapoo Coat

As this is a mixed breed, there is no coat standard and the Cockapoo may carry coat characteristics from both the Poodle and the Cocker Spaniel. The preferred coat of this breed is dense, curly or very  wavy and close to the body.

Cockapoo Training

This is a highly intelligent dog breed and trains relatively easily. The Cockapoo excels at obedience. This dog breed is quite sensitive to voice tones and requires relatively firm, yet gentle, handling.

Cockapoo Activity

This dog breed is well suited to apartment or city living. The Cockapoo is a very spirited dog that loves to run and play with his family. This breed is fine without at yard, but does require a daily walk. The Cockapoo has a tendency to overeat and daily exercise is needed to stay healthy.
