This dog breed is named after the city of Tuléar in Madagascar and its cotton-textured coat and originated in the early 20th century. The Coton de Tuléar is a small breed of dog. This breed is still rare in the United States, where there are perhaps 5,000.

This dog breed has medium to long hair that is fluffy and cotton-like. The coat of the Coton De Tulear is hair, as opposed to fur. This is a non-shedding breed with low dander. The Coton de Tulear comes in different colors, white, white with light brown spots, black and white. As this breed gets older, color spots fade away and they are eventually pure white. There is an outer coat that is dirt shedding and non-oily. Most, but not all, Cotons will have a fine, thin, downy under coat.
