This is a strong and powerful dog breed. The Chinese Shar-Pei is known for their unique wrinkles. This dog breed makes a superb watchdog and is somewhat intimidating. The Chinese Shar-Pei is extremely devoted and loyal to their family.

This dog breed is intelligent, dignified and generally calm dog, but is also extremely alert making them ideal guard and watch dogs. The Chinese Shar-Pei has a strong protective instinct and should be socialized from an early age to prevent over-protectiveness.

Chinese Shar-Pei Temperament

This dog breed is alert and confident. The Chinese Shar-Pei makes a wonderful companion dog for the seasoned dog owner, but this dog breed is not for everyone. The Chinese Shar-Pei gets along well with children, but should always be supervised around infants as they are extremely powerful. This breed tends to be a little aggressive towards other dogs, but with the right socialization, this can be overcome.

Chinese Shar-Pei Care

This dog breed does not require a lot of grooming. The Chinese Shar-Pei requires occasional brushing with a rubber brush to remove loose or dead hair. The ears of this breed should be cleaned regularly as well as under the folds of skin.

Chinese Shar-Pei Coat

This dog breed has a very rough and straight coat. The length of the coat of the Chinese Shar-Pei ranges from extremely short to no longer than an inch at the withers. This is know as a "brush coat."

This dog breed tends to be somewhat stubborn and can be challenging to train and handle. The Chinese Shar-Pei is however very willing and keen to please, and also very intelligent. With firm handling, they are very trainable.

Chinese Shar-Pei Activity

This dog breed adapts relatively well to apartment or city living, provided they are sufficiently exercised. An average sized yard is recommended, but not essential for the Chinese Shar-Pei. This dog breed loves walks with his owner. Because of the folds of the skin, the Chinese Shar-Pei can become hot easily and fresh water should always be on hand.
